I am a student from Asia and I was recently given a real-life task from one of the local companies (let's say, Company X). -Company X produced around 20 millions tons of coal annually, of which 15million goes to Europe and other Asian countries, and around 5 million used inside the country.

Because of coal's high carbon content, increasing use will exacerbate the problem of climate change unless coal plants are deployed with very high efficiency and large scale CCS is implemented. CCS is the critical enabling technology because it allows significant reduction in CO2 emissions while allowing coal to meet future energy needs.

The coal industry can be studied through several lenses, all of which reveal an industry in the midst of a historic decline. The first lens is coal production, which peaked in 2008 and has since steadily dropped. The 2017 U.S. Energy and Employment Report reveals there was a 53% decrease in net generation from coal sources between 2006 and 2016.
