Little by little, under Jennie Butchart's supervision, the abandoned quarry blossomed into the spectacular Sunken Garden. By 1908, reflecting their world travels, the Butcharts had created a Japanese Garden on the sea-side of their home.

By 1908 the limestone ran out, leaving a gigantic pit near the house. In an attempt to hide this hideous excavation, Jennie decided to expand her garden. The concept of a sunken garden formed, and Jennie had massive amounts of topsoil imported by horse cart to form the garden bed.

Nov 11, 2019ยท Apparently, Jennie would even descend the side of the quarry in a boatswain's chair to tuck ivy into fissures in its walls. The Sunken Garden is by no means the only area to explore. The complex is laid out in clearly defined zones, each with its own vision and panache. Jennie sought to maximize the visual impact everywhere.
