A Blue Roof can be created on a typical Hydrotech PMR (Protected Membrane Roof Assembly) utilizing standard loose stone for ballast. It is the simplest blue roof that can be created. Using standard ballast stone, the water in the blue roof is stored within the void spaces of the stone and to the required level above the ballast.

Roof areas subjected to different wind action require varying amounts of ballast. The amount of ballast varies from 50 to 65 kg/m² (10 to 13 psf) in conventionally loose-laid, gravel stone ballasted .

Ballast is material that is used to provide stability to a vehicle or structure. Ballast, other than cargo, may be placed in a vehicle, often a ship or the gondola of a balloon or airship, to provide stability.A compartment within a boat, ship, submarine, or other floating structure that holds water is called a ballast tank.Water should move in and out from the ballast tank to balance the ship.

Jan 15, 2015· Ballasted roof systems are not really a new concept. They were installed on roofs even in the early 1970's. They look aesthetically-appealing and installation is fast and easy. Though Ballast Roofing Systems look very similar to Built-Up Roofing Systems or BUR's, there are certain differences.

A wide range of sizes are available. Unlike river gravel which has been known to be hazardous, pavers used as ballast or walkways provide a durable, safe method of protecting the roof system. Lightweight Ballast Pavers can be used when the roof will not accommodate the load of a standard paver.

The gravel used in built up roofing (what the roofing contractors were used to) was not the same as that used in a ballasted roof. For built up roofing, the gravel was generally .25 - .5 inches in diameter. The stones used in ballasted roofing are generally 1.5 - 2.5 inches in diameter and applied in a thicker layer.

Ballasted Roof System. Ballasted roof systems have been installed since the early 1970's. They are known for their installation speed and pleasing aesthetics. Most ballasted roof systems use gravel stone that is similar to what would be used in landscaping. However, other ballasted systems use pavers, which are easier to walk on and can be ...

The 3" (7.62 cm) nominal square plate is 0.010" (0.25 mm) thicker than the standard UltraFast square metal plate, providing a stiffer surface area to improve wind uplift performance of the system. The plate is used for fastening Invinsa® Roof Board to the roof deck in fully adhered single ply systems.

Additional benefits of ballast on a flat roof. The gravel in a ballasted roof helps absorb heat, preventing the sun from heating the roof materials below and making the roof more energy-efficient. (Sources: WATERPROOF! Magazine and Roofing Southwest.) Although single-ply roofs inherently have sun-protective qualities, ballast provides an extra ...

Ballasted EPDM roof systems have been a sustainable option for decades by Ronald L. Goodman B Before sustainability became a popular concept in building design, ballasted EPDM roof systems were widely used. Dating to the 1960s, this time-tested, reliable roof system still offers more sustainable fea-tures than many systems currently available.

roof provides an environmentally preferred option to reuse the insulation • Allow for a range of ballast options – stone, precast paving slabs, soil and plantings for a vegetative roof, interlocking stone or concrete – depending on use and aesthetic considerations • Are compatible with a .

White Ballast can range in size from 2 1/2 - 3/4 inches and can be made to meet various ASTM standards. Our roofing Ballast is commonly installed over membrane and single-ply systems at 1000-1500 pounds per square. Ballast is a natural product that does not require any chemicals in manufacturing and is fire-resistant.

Building owners are advised that ballast removal needs to be performed within several days of roof stocking, since a membrane roof may be damaged if left without ballast for too long. Eagle Rivet corporation has stone ballast removal capabilities, as well as a great deal of experience installing, repairing and removing stone ballast roofing.

To further clarify the Cool Ballasted roof system, the submittal states that the roof system to be installed to the national standard ANSI/SPRI RP-4, "Wind Design Standard for Ballasted Single-Ply Roofing Systems." This standard defines the stone and paver types that can be used with single-ply systems and the minimum weights required to ...

Roof ballast removal is completed with a giant vacuuming truck and custom designed piping that allows the stone to be sucked right off the roof and into the truck. The stone is either left on site if the customer wants to keep it, or disposed off site. At the end of the day, the roof looks dramatically different (and dirtier) without ballast.

Ballasted EPDM roofing systems also play a similar role to reflective roof surfaces. Although pavers and stone ballast do not have as high reflectivity rates as white coatings, ongoing tests indicate that there is a positive impact on energy usage with this EPDM system type.

•Always clear any ballast stone where the array will be placed and clean the roof surface. Never place array on top of ballast stone. •Never install a system on windy days. Safety •Always wear long sleeves when assembling the module to the base. The edges of the access holes can be sharp. Using fingerless gloves also helps. Assembly Sequence
