A recent Zimbabwe Mining Federation report says small-scale miners' production rose from three tonnes of gold in 2014 to seven tonnes last year while big players produced 14 tonnes.

The mining industry of Zimbabwe is administered by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, the Department of Geological Survey, the Department of Metallurgy, and the Mining promotion and Development Department. The country's main commodities include metallurgical-grade chromite, as well as asbestos, coal, copper, gold, nickel, and iron ore.

Mining was Zimbabwe's leading industry in 2002, contributing 27% of export trade. The chief minerals were coal, gold, copper, nickel, tin, and clay, and Zimbabwe was a world leader in the production of lithium minerals, chrysotile asbestos, and ferrochromium, with more than half of the world's known chromium reserves.
